On October 23, 2011, The Walking Dead aired the episode “Bloodletting,” and we would be introduced to the on-screen version of Hershel Greene. On October 7, 2018, the episode “A New Beginning” would be dedicated to the actor Scott Wilson, who played Hershel, as he lost his battle with cancer the day before at the age of 76.

Hershel was a voice of reason, a man of integrity, and someone who passed on wonderful words of wisdom. One of my favorite Hershel quotes is:

"I can’t profess to understand God’s plan. Christ promised the resurrection of the dead, I just thought he had something a little different in mind."

Remembering Scott Wilson

Scott Wilson had at least 80 role credits to his name with a career spanning over 50 years. In his first three roles, he played suspected murderers, with his debut in In the Heat of the Night in 1967.

Wilson starred with Robert Blake in the movie In Cold Blood, where the duo played real-life murderers Richar Hickock and his partner Perry Smith respectively. This role earned Wilson and Blake the cover of Life magazine, where the actors posed between author Truman Capote on a Kansas highway.

He was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Captain Billy Cutshaw in The Ninth Configuration (1980).

The movie Dead Man Walking saw Wilson as the prison chaplain with Susan Saradon and Sean Penn.

His role as Hershel Greene is a favorite among The Walking Dead fandom. He was a tough guy who spoke his mind, survived having his leg cut off, and all the other apocalyptic traumas.
