It has been rumored and disputed more times than fans can remember, but now Deadline is reporting that Boondock Saints III is happening. This movie will reunite director Troy Duffy with the MacManus brothers, played by Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flannery.

This announcement is exciting news for the die-hard Boondock Saints fans who have been waiting forever to see the MacManus brothers back in action. Duffy and Flannery wrote the script with much input from Reedus. Shaun Redick (Get Out, BlacKkKlansman) and Yvette Yates Redick, a partner in Impossible Dream Entertainment, are producing with Don Carmody (Good Will Hunting) and Duffy.

Filming for the third installment will begin in May of 2022. This will allow Flannery to finish filming for The Boys and Reedus will have completed filming for the final season of The Walking Dead.

The Boondock Saints III will star Norman Reedus

The original film was released in 1999 and followed brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus (Flannery and Reedus, respectively). Soon after the brothers kill two Russian Mafia members in self-defense, they experience epiphanies and become vigilantes. They are joined by “Funny Man” Rocco (David Della Rocco) as they rid their hometown of Boston of crime and evil.

The sequel Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day was released in 2009, and the events in this movie take place eight years after the first movie. The MacManus brothers and their father are living quietly in Ireland when someone frames them for the murder of a priest in the US. The brothers travel back to the US to hunt down whoever killed the priest and put the blame on them.

At the end of the second film, the brothers are in prison, and the third film will pick up as they are being released from spending quite some time there. They will be older, and the world will have changed quite a bit since they were locked up.

Duffy told Deadline:

"The fans have loved these characters for 20 years. They use terms of endearment like ‘the Brothers’ or ‘the Boys.’ We left them in jail at the end of Boondock 2 and fans want to know what happened to them. Norman and Sean have been a driving force to keep this franchise on track and break some new ground story-wise. The fans have been waiting. They literally ask about it daily, and I am really excited to be working with Impossible Dream to make Boondock III a reality."
