Fear the Walking Dead introduced Keith Carradine’s character John Dorie Sr. in season six. This was a welcome addition as it came on the heels of the death of his beloved son John Dorie (Garrett Dillahunt). In the most recent episode of the series John Sr. and his daughter-in-law June (Jenna Elfman) were holed up in a bunker after the nuclear explosion.

In a recent interview with AMC.com, Carradine shared some insight into filming the most recent episode of Fear the Walking Dead, “Cindy Hawkins.” During this episode, John Sr. went above ground and had to wear a make-shift hazmat suit because of the fallout. These scenes were terrific for the viewers as we got to see things through John Sr.’s eyes via his gas mask. But, for the actor, it was a different experience.

He shared with AMC that wearing the suit and mask required a lot of physical effort. He had to wear a harness with a camera on it while the director would guide him through the scene. While it may have been an extra effort on his part, the result was a horror film like view from his gas mask. This showed the viewer just how narrow his sightline was and how easily someone or something could sneak up on him and cause him harm.

John Sr. was the police officer responsible for ensuring that mass-murdering cult leader Teddy Maddox was thrown into prison. Sure, he had to plant some evidence to get that result. Still, this episode finally gave him some closure to the cases when he discovered Teddy’s torture chamber, proving without a doubt he committed the murders and the body of the final victim. Carradine believes Teddy has left a scar on John Sr. that will always be with him.

June and John have a major confrontation in this episode. They both hide vital information from the other, which could have divided them permanently. June lied about the timeline of going above ground and John about his drinking. Then

June stabbed John with the needle attempting to sedate him, and John left her trapped in the bunker.

By the end of the episode, it seems they have let those things go and now find themselves in Strands tower. What that means for the future of these characters, I am sure we will soon find out.
