Fans of The Walking Dead alum Xander Berkeley have known he has been on-location filming in Montana. The project was kept quiet, but today Deadline has announced that Berkeley will star in the western Butcher’s Crossing.

Berkely played the Hilltop leader Gregory on The Walking Dead beginning in season six until his death in season nine. He is also well known for his roles in Air Force One, The Republic of Sarah, Dark Harbor, The Mentalist, 24, and the original Candyman, to only name a few of his roles over his long-running career.

Butcher’s Crossing is an adaptation of the 1960 novel of the same name by John Edward Williams. The western is directed by Gabe Polsky, who co-wrote the film with Liam Satre-Meloy.

Berkely, Jeremy Bobb, Rachel Keller and Paul Raci join previously announced cast members, Fred Hechinger and Nicolas Cage.

The story is set in the early 1870s when Harvard student Will Andrews (Hechinger) sets off to explore the American West. He is naive and inexperienced but seeks to live off the land during his journey. He stops in the fictional town of Butcher’s Crossing, Kansas, and joins a buffalo-hunting expedition. This experience puts his life and sanity at risk.

Fans who follow Berkeley on social media have been privy to some fantastic photos of Berkeley while filming, but he never revealed the project. It is exciting to know we will get to see him on the big screen soon.
