Jon Bernthal will always hold a special place in TWD Family’s hearts for his role as the hot-headed Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead series. He was a character you loved to hate, which is a nod to Bernthal’s acting chops. Since leaving the series, he has portrayed many roles, impressing us all with his skills as an actor. Up next, we will see him in a different role for the film King Richard.

The film King Richard will release on HBO Max and in theaters on November 19. This film is a biographical look at Richard Williams’s life (Will Smith), father and coach of Venus and Serena Williams. It is an inspiring story about the man who would change the sport of tennis forever and raise two of the most gifted athletes of all time.

The film is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men) and written by Zach Baylin. Smith, Tim White and Trevor White serve as the producers.

Jon Bernthal King Richard role

The latest film role sees Bernthal portraying Rick Macci, a tennis coach and former player who started the Rick Macci International Tennis Academy in 1985. He coached several notable players throughout his career, including  Venus Williams, Serena Williams, and Andy Roddick.

In an interview with Variety, Green shared that when he first met Bernthal, he didn’t feel he would be suitable for the part, that he looked nothing like Macci. But, Bernthal was so committed to the role he had already started losing weight to get into character. Green was impressed during their face-to-face interview where they discussed passion projects, growing up as athletes and their children.

This role is quite different from most of Bernthal’s other tough-guy roles. He used his love for his children, who he says are the absolute center of his life, to get into character for this role.

The Variety interview is a fantastic look into who Jon Bernthal is. Be sure to check it out.
