Connecting The Walking Dead, Season Two: Blood And Lies

The CRM wants the Civic Republic to be the only people in The Walking Dead world.

Easily the biggest reveal in this week’s episode of World Beyond was that the Civic Republic Military intends to do to Portland the same thing they did to Omaha and Campus Colony. Turn its population into walkers for use in their experiments, either through chemical warfare or old-fashioned zombie attack.

Of course, with Omaha and Campus Colony already destroyed, this led to another revelation. The CRM wants to ensure that the Civic Republic is the only major community existing in North America by destroying Portland.

Here’s another thing I just thought of, while not mentioned in this week’s episode, is a reasonably logical conclusion to reach. If Major General Beale is already asking for an “emergency delay” in civilian oversight of the CRM because of what happened to Omaha, then, after Portland falls, don’t you think he’ll insist that the CRM delay that oversight even longer, maybe indefinitely? Considering that they’re allowed to do whatever they want outside of the Civic Republic’s borders and have zero oversight from the government right now, if the Portland operation goes off, you can bet their power would be, practically, absolute.

When you think of it in those terms, suddenly, it makes perfect sense why the CRM would want to destroy their “allies.”

In the words of 19th Century British politician Lord Acton: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
