A Person Who Wants You To Be Dependent On Them Against The Walking Dead Is NOT A Partner.

One thing we learned about Mickey in this week’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead was that she was a resident of Victor Strand’s tower. The crux of this episode was centered around Strand assigning Dwight and Sherry to find Mickey and return her to him.

Of course, as we learn from Mickey, the reason Strand wants her back has nothing to do with concern for her safety, but rather the fact that she managed to escape his tower and lived to tell the tale.

The reason for this is the fact that, for as much as Strand wants to recreate civilization, he also seems to want to be “the only game in town.” He doesn’t want the residents of his tower to know that it’s really possible to leave. If they did, they’d know that they wouldn’t have to put up with his uncompassionate way of running things.

This is something you need to be wary of in the apocalypse. Just because the world has collapsed, it won’t mean that people won’t still have hang-ups and complexes, and compulsions. They’ll be just as big of jerks, weirdos, and control-freaks as they were before the dead started walking and, rather than being a partner, may want to be someone who others are dependent on.

Relationships like that never end well. Whenever someone wants the other person to be dependent on them, they will guard that dependence jealously. They will work hard to ensure that the other party doesn’t find, hear, see, or do anything that makes it, so they don’t need them.

While Strand didn’t lash out at Mickey (He’s too sophisticated for that), he wants to ensure that she’s returned to him so that no one else can repeat what she did. Rest assured, though, many other people would lash out and would probably resort to violence when faced with a loss of control. What that could result in in a zombie apocalypse, where no one might stop them, I dread to imagine.

Remember that dependence is the building block of any abusive relationship and can only end in disaster.

And that’s our Walking Dead Survival Rule Of The Week! A zombie apocalypse is most challenging when you’re alone; that’s why, ideally, you should have a partner. A partner is someone you can rely on to watch your back, someone you can trust, and someone who gives a damn about you. If they want you to be dependent on them, they don’t want you as a partner. They want you as a slave. If you want to learn more about surviving against the dead, why not pick up a copy of my book, The Rules: A Guide To Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse!
