Les Morts-Vivants

With this being the first series finale in the Walking Dead universe, World Beyond also provided us with the first post-credits sequence, which tied everything back to where everything started.

Inside a long-abandoned building, a woman used a laptop to watch a series of video calls from, of all people, Dr. Edwin Jenner, the last survivor of the CDC. He was introduced in the final two episodes of the first season of The Walking Dead.

The videos in question took place at least several days (If not several weeks) before Rick Grimes and his group of Atlanta survivors arrived at the CDC looking for help, as he is still, at that time, eagerly communicating with his counterparts in France.

This is significant because, when Rick’s group met Dr. Jenner and began to ask him what he knew about the zombie virus and what progress had been made, he told them that the last he’d heard, the closest country to finding a solution was, you guessed it: France.

However, they were not successful. As we learned way back when we first met Dr. Jenner, he’d stopped hearing from any of his colleagues in other parts of the world sometime before Rick’s group arrived, meaning that, however close they were, it wasn’t close enough to put a stop to the disease ravaging the world. France fell just as everywhere else had, if not even worse, as we would learn shortly after. While the woman watched Jenner’s videos, a young man interrupted her criticizing her and her colleagues for making the situation in France even worse before doing what he told her he’d do to her colleagues if he had the chance: Kill her.

I can’t help but appreciate that, as World Beyond ends, it ties itself, and perhaps the Walking Dead universe’s future, back to where nearly the entire series started.
