Melissa McBride portrays fan-favorite Carol Peletier on The Walking Dead series. This is a character whose comic book counterpart died early in that story. The series has changed her story, and she is now one of only two characters who have survived since season one. Creator Robert Kirkman praises McBride for her portrayal of Carol.

In an interview with THR in 2014, Kirkman discusses one regret he has about the series, the new companion series, and Carol Peletier’s growth throughout the series. In the comics, Carol has a daughter, Sophia, befriends Lori, has a relationship with Tyreese, and eventually plans to commit suicide. She makes sure Lori will care for Sophia if something happens to her, and then she allows a walker to bite her. She reanimates quickly, and Andrea then puts her down.

In the series, the Carol we know and love is quite different, which is why she is a fan favorite.

The Walking Dead Carol Peletier

In season one, Carol is quiet and submissive to her piece of crap husband Ed. She is an abuse victim, and everyone knows it. The first spark of life we see in her is after Ed’s reanimated corpse is killed, she takes a pickax to his head, and all those years of pent-up frustration and anger are taken out on his corpse. This is the moment Carol is reborn.

She becomes a vital member of the group with outstanding fighting skills and leadership qualities. She isn’t afraid to do the things others know need doing but can’t quite bring themselves to do. Sometimes her actions are quite shocking, but in the end, they are for the greater good, and this is an apocalypse; survival is the key in this world.

Carol has endured so much heartbreak that it is a wonder she is still alive. The grief alone would kill a lesser person. She has lost her biological child and the many other children she has taken in as her own.

She has also risked her life to save countless others, even those who have wronged her. As we close in on the end of the flagship series, it will be interesting to see what else Carol does and how this will lead to the Daryl and Carol spin-off series.

If Kirkman praised McBride way back in 2014 for her portrayal of Carol, I wonder what he thinks of her now!
