Where is Alexandria in The Walking Dead?
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead series has seen many communities come and go, but Alexandria has stood since before the outbreak. It was initially established as an upscale sustainable community, but where is it located?
Alexandria was a planned community complete with a solar grid, cisterns and eco-based filtration. The housing prices ranged from $800,000 – $1.4 million, and the appeal was that the community would be self-sufficient.
Soon after the outbreak, the military used Alexandria as a safe zone. Ohio Congresswoman Deanna Monroe, her family and other D.C. evacuees were directed to the community. They were on their way back to Ohio to assist with the crisis at hand. The military was supposed to return with further instructions, but this never occurred. The Monroes and the others used the supplies at Alexandria to survive. Eventually, her husband, Reg, a professor of architecture, took charge of building the walls to protect the residents. The same walls in season 11 have been destroyed by the Whisperer war.
In the beginning, Deanna, Reg, their sons Spencer and Aiden, along with Aaron and Eric, were leaders in the community. Aaron is the sole remaining survivor of the earliest residents and now feels he must shoulder the burden of keeping the community going.
Where is Alexandria located?
In The Walking Dead, the community of Alexandria is located in Virginia, approximately six miles from Washington D.C. In season five, Rick Grimes and his group are approached by Alexandria’s recruiter Aaron, and Rick is reluctant to follow this stranger to a new community. The group was in dire straights, without a home base, so they trusted Aaron and went to Alexandria.
Alexandria is the longest-standing community and is the only one that the residents choose to repair instead of abandoning after destruction occurs.
In reality, Alexandria is located in the town of Senoia, Georgia. It is within sight of the water tower and the Governor’s apartment in Woodbury, which is actually the town of Senoia. The podcast Clip it Up has a great video to see filming locations via a TWD Studio Tour including Alexandria. Or, you can visit the town of Senoia and stand right outside the walls of Alexandria.
With the series coming to an end, some of the brownstones in Alexandria are being sold. So, if you have $1 million lying around, you can live in a piece of TWD history.
