Walking Dead: Celebrating seven years of Richonne with spinoff update
By Renee Hansen
On Feb. 21, 2016, in The Walking Dead episode “The Next World,” Richonne became a reality. Richonne is the ship term used for The Walking Dead power couple Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). In the episode, the characters would finally become a couple with their first kiss. Seven years later, fans are celebrating the dynamic duo with the announcement that Summit, the series that will feature Rick and Michonne, began filming in Feb. 2023 and a new photo of the reunion
The Walking Dead showrunner, Angela Kang, knows what many viewers want, more Richonne. In season six, Angela Kang and Corey Reed wrote an episode that created one of the best couples in The Walking Dead universe. It was a tender heated moment that created Richonne.
Kang, in response to a fan asking for a never before seen photo of Richonne. She obliged and not only shared a photo but shared a thread about some fun facts about this episode and the Richonne scenes.
She described the first script as her fanfic version, as they don’t often write romantic scenes for the apocalypse. TWD Chief Content Officer Scott Gimple did the second draft, and Kang shares a secret, Gimple is a “stealth hopeless romantic.” This is evident in his revised script for the scene.
Kang also shares that deleted scenes from this episode make her blush!
So, share them already; the fandom deserves to see these deleted scenes.
The Walking Dead power couple, Richonne
There have been many great couples throughout the series, but many fans feel the pairing of two amazing characters, Michonne and Rick, is the best duo in the series.
There are many emotional moments in the series, but one that really stood out was Michonne’s reaction to Rick blowing up the bridge. The raw emotion that overtook her as she realized she lost the love of her life was too much for the viewers to bear.
Viewers have known since the bridge blew that Rick survived. But, all this time, Michonne has had to carry her grief while still providing for and protecting her two children, Judith and RJ. Upon discovering that Rick survived, she set out to find him.
In the summer of 2022, fans were surprised by the announcement that a new series featuring Rick and Michonne would be filming in 2022. This series will replace The Walking Dead movies and has begun filming in New Jersey. The release date for Summit, as it is known, will come sometime in 2023. Today, on the seventh anniversary of the couple, AMC released the first photo from this long-awaited reunion. A simple but powerful image.
