Many movies and series have taken advantage of the tax incentives available for filming in the state of Georgia. The Walking Dead universe series is no exception. The flagship series and the spin-off Fear the Walking Dead film in Atlanta and Savannah, respectively.

Fans of The Walking Dead flock to the town that is the heart of Walking Dead, Senoia, Georgia. This location has been the backdrop for the Governor’s community, Woodbury, and many other scenes downtown and other areas of the city.

The main attraction to Senoia is Alexandria. The community is located south of the downtown area. Fans can walk fairly close to the community and see the windmill towering over the metal walls. It is a sight that only fans can truly appreciate. But, if you haven’t seen it yet, you need to schedule your trip soon. The community will be dismantled after the series finishes filming this spring.

AMC has taken advantage of The Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act (GEIIA), which gives a 20% tax credit to companies that spend $500,000 or more in Georgia during production and post-production. The series films in numerous locations in Atlanta and the surrounding areas.

Remember the CDC in season 1? The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center is the building used for the CDC in the series.

In the town of Newnan, a factory building located at 5 Perry Street was used to film the arena fight scene featuring Merle and Daryl and where Michonne fights some walkers being held for the Governors arena fights. Below is a photo of that location. It has been used in other scenes and other projects as well.

Many fans travel to Atlanta to the Jackson Street Bridge. This is where one of the most iconic scenes in Walking Dead history was shot. Viewers saw Rick Grimes make his way on horseback to Atlanta to look for his family.

The Esco Feed Mill is located in the small town of Haralson and has been the sight of many scenes, including the one where Daryl had to kill the walker version of his brother Merle.

Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island, is another must-see sight. This was used when Tara washed ashore at Oceanside and the training sessions at that community.

Other notable locations include Dumpster Alley in Hampton that Glenn and Nicholas made famous at an alleyway off of James Street and Cherry Street. Carol’s house outside of the Kingdom is located in Fayetteville at 774 Old Greenville Road. You can visit Bellwood Quarry in Atlanta, which was used in season 1 as the site of the Atlanta groups campsite. The area has since been transformed into Westside Reservoir Park.

You can also check out Sharpsburg, the home of the pharmacy Maggie and Glenn visit, and the bar where Rick finds Hershel. Grantville is home to Morgan’s apartment, but I don’t believe it is available to view any longer. You can also see the “Away with You” wall.

Senoia also has the Woodbury Shoppe, The Walking Dead Museum, Abraham’s Army, and several options for tours of filming locations in the town.

You can also visit the original Nic & Norman restaurant in the town of Senoia. Great atmosphere and even better food and drinks!
