Jon Bernthal portrayed Shane Walsh on The Walking Dead series for seasons 1 and 2. Shane was Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) partner at King County Sheriff’s Department and best friend in high school. He was one of the leaders of the original Atlanta group in season 1.

Shane visited Rick in the hospital while in a coma after being shot on the job. Eventually, he would tell Rick’s wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and son Carl  (Chandler Riggs) that Rick died. By the time they set up camp outside Atlanta, he was the leader of this group, started into a sexual relationship with Lori and became a father figure to Carl.

Shane would go on to be a primary antagonist in season 2 and butt heads with many within the group, including Rick.

Shane from The Walking Dead

Has Shane returned to The Walking Dead series? Viewers who haven’t kept up with the series often pose questions like this regarding a character’s return to the series. Shane was killed in the season 2 episode “Better Angels” when Rick pieced together his story regarding a captive and realized Shane lied to lure him to a field so he could kill Rick and get Lori and Carl back to himself. So, Shane is one character who won’t be making a return to the series unless it is via a flashback or hallucination. This has happened in past episodes when Rick thought he saw Shane at Woodbury in season 3 and again in season 9 “What Comes After.”

When Shane discovered that Lori was pregnant with his baby but would stay with Rick he made it his mission to get rid of Rick. Shane was obsessed with Lori, and his priority was to ensure he would get her back at any cost.

Shane had the potential to be a great leader as his leadership abilities and combat training would be beneficial during an apocalypse. But, he let his obsession with Lori and his jealousy of Rick overtake him until he became a morally unstable man.

Jon Bernthal – other projects
