During part one of season 11 of The Walking Dead, Alden (Callan McAuliffe) was wounded and left alone in a church, as he was injured to the point that he was slowing down the mission. He told Maggie (Lauren Cohan) that he would be fine, but viewers knew his fate.

Even though the fandom knew there was no way he could survive, no one expected the emotional scene of Maggie finding his reanimated body. This scene was the first one to show Maggie has had an emotional breakdown since her return. She has a lot of emotional baggage to carry and has held it well until now.

Alden was the first of the Saviors to express an interest in joining Maggie and the other residents of Hilltop. They had a special bond, and his death was another event that added heartbreak to her already wounded soul.

The Walking Dead Alden and Maggie

A few days ago, McAuliffe posted a photo of himself, in walker makeup, alongside Cohan as she watched him with a huge smile. His caption stated, “I did the Bilbo bit.” The Lord of the Rings fans would get this comment as he most likely referred to Bilbo’s speech on his birthday.

Then a few days later, Cohan shared the same photo along with a couple of others from the episode.

She stated that the first photo sums up how McAuliffe made people feel. She also noted that it was easy to feel gutted by the loss of Alden. She hoped that everyone “enjoyed” the episode and praised Bear McCreary for his always stellar score.

The most heartbreaking thing about Alden’s death is the back story that wasn’t shown on screen. Alden was found by some Reapers who broke his legs and then slashed his throat. The throat slash can be quickly seen before Maggie puts him down. This explains why the walker version of Alden made no noise and was crawling towards her.

Callan McAuliffe will always be a part of TWD Family, and it was fantastic having him on the series.
