The Walking Dead season 11 episode 10, “New Haunts,” gave viewers a great look into the Commonwealth community. It was fun seeing everyone enjoy the Halloween event and to see who ended up in the Commonwealth.

In the previous episode, “No Other Way,” Deputy Governor Lance Hornsby, Eugene and a group of Commonwealth soldiers descended on Alexandria. Hornsby offered some great choices; they would fix up Alexandria, or people could choose to come live at the Commonwealth. But, as always, there is a cost to something that appears to be too good to be true.

“No Other Way” begins 30 days after some Alexandria residents arrived at the Commonwealth. The adults are all situated in jobs similar to those they had before the outbreak, but one very interesting thing was the children and their reaction to things they have never experienced.

The episode begins with Judith, RJ, and Uncle Daryl walking down a dark hall with walkers grabbing at them. The children look a bit frightened, but Daryl does nothing, and then it is apparent this is a haunted house for the Halloween festivities. Seeing that Rj and Judith are unsettled, Daryl tells the “walker” coming towards them, “Hey man, that’s enough.”

The children of Alexandria have witnessed some significant events that would make them uneasy in this atmosphere. But, they handle it well, and when they come out, they are met by Jerry and Nabila and their family. Jerry reassures RJ that he is home, safe and sound.

All the children are dressed for the holiday in cute little costumes as they enjoy the delights of the Commonwealth. As they walk around, they see a petting zoo, which we learn that Ezekiel is in charge of, which is fitting since his former occupation was a zookeeper. There are many games to be played and so much food. We see Carol is a baker and gives Judith a frosted cookie, something she probably never tasted until now.

She meets a girl Mei (Chiara Misawa), who is interested in the fact that Jude, a new shortened name for Judith, has lived in the wasteland, as she calls it. Jude looks uneasy as Mei mentions that she is probably not scared of anything. Mei tells her she will take her to find the best candy. When the girls are handed cotton candy, the look on Jude’s face is adorable.

We also see Jerry’s children enjoying the delights of the petting zoo with huge smiles on their faces. We see baby Coco dressed as a little flower, but she’s tiny, so she only naps through the excitement.

Next, we see Princess working at the record shop, a job she had before the outbreak as Jude and a new friend shop. Mei is surprised that Jude does get an allowance. Since moving to the Commonwealth, the survivors have much to adjust to, including money, which is entirely foreign to Jude. Mei purchases a record for Jude as she says it’s a gift for a friend.

When Jude is home with RJ and Daryl they talk about staying at the Commonwealth or going back to Alexandria when it is finished and both children want to stay at the Commonwealth. When RJ answered you could see that he is really enjoying this new life.

Towards the end of the episode, Daryl is dressed in his Commonwealth military uniform, looking official, as Jude puts it, while she looks adorable in her new dress. Daryl giving Sebastian a win, as Mercer put it, also helped his station within the community. They have a new apartment, new clothes, and a record player to listen to her gift from Mei. You can see the joy in both their faces as “Eat the Rich” by Motorhead plays.

The Motorhead album was no doubt approved by Norman Reedus as this is one of his favorite bands.
