Maggie and Negan Walking Dead spin off, Isle of the Dead
By Renee Hansen
The fandom has gone nuts with news of the fifth Walking Dead spin-off. This time viewers will see Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan) as they traverse the island of Manhattan that is overrun with the undead.
AMC announced that this series will begin with a six-episode first season with a description as follows:
"Isle of the Dead envisions the popular Maggie and Negan characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror."
The series is written by Eli Jorné, who is currently a writer for the flagship series. He will also serve as showrunner and executive produce with Cohan and Morgan.
Fans are divided about the pairing of these two unlikely allies. What could possibly send them on a mission together, and what is the draw to NYC?
When AMC announced the Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) series, this seemed like a totally natural thing, to pair two long-time characters who have become the best of friends. We can all imagine this journey centered on two strong characters who have been through hell and back together.
Isle of the Dead Walking Dead spin off
Since Maggie’s return, she has made it very clear she isn’t happy with the turn of events that allowed Negan outside of the cell she last saw him in. She told the story to her Wardens, and they were not pleased to be working alongside him.
Now, all of Maggie’s Wardens are dead, except for Elijah (Okea Eme-Akwari), and the six-month time jump clip shows that Maggie will return to Hilltop. She is also finally free of Negan as he exiled himself once he realized it was only a matter of time before Maggie would break their truce and kill him as she did with the Reapers.
It is tough to imagine putting these two on the same path again. Negan has tried hard to prove to Maggie that they are similar in handling situations. He has been very blunt with her about the fact that he should have killed everyone in Rick’s group when he first met them. This conversation is what made Maggie kill all the Reapers instead of honoring the agreement to let them live.
This storyline will get very interesting, especially if we see how the pair teams up and head off to Manhattan before the end of The Walking Dead series.
