Die-hard fans of Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead, know all about his love-hate emotions for his cat, Eye in the Dark (EITD). Tuesday, his son Mingus Reedus posted on his Instagram story that EITD had passed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Reedus and his family, as it is always difficult to lose a pet.

EITD became a celebrity in his own right, with many fans joining #EITDTribe, a hashtag for the group of fans who love his cat almost as much as Reedus and his family. You will find many fan art tributes to this photogenic feline if you search socials. He even has a fan-run Twitter account.

Reedus’ son was five when he told his father he wanted a black kitten. They went to a shelter in the East Village and found this cat who the shelter staff warned them “is never gonna love anybody.” But, his son had other plans and proceeded to break the cat, “like a horse.”

"“He named him that because we had black floors and he was a black kitten. And I said, ‘What are you going to name him?’ And he said, ‘I’m going to name him Eye in the Dark, because I can only see his eyes,’ ” Reedus says. via USA Today"

Over the years, fans have been treated to many photos of EITD traveling with Reedus or just sitting around the house. Reedus once posted a great shot of EITD on the bed in a hotel room with a note that reads “Cat on bed” to alert the staff of his presence.

EITD lived a long life where he went from a box in an alley to become a member of the Reedus family and seemed to be quite pampered.

Norman Reedus – The Walking Dead

Reedus has been filming the final episodes of the last season of The Walking Dead. He has portrayed Daryl Dixon for 12 years, but he’s not finished yet. Daryl and Carol (Melissa McBride) will star in a spin-off series that is set to release in 2023.

You can pre-order his new novel, The Ravaged, which will release on April 5.

Our thoughts are with Norman Reedus and his family as they mourn the loss of their precious cat, Eye in the Dark.
