The Walking Dead – making bad deals

Sometimes, The Only Deals You Can Make ARE Bad Ones.

When it comes right down to it, survival in a zombie apocalypse is about making do with the circumstances presented to us, not the circumstances we wish were presented to us. We can’t choose the selection of allies at our disposal and are forced to choose between allies who are, at best, untrustworthy, and, at worst, downright awful.

Let’s go back to the Saviors/Whisperers comparison I made earlier. If a group of violent extortionists show up on your group’s doorstep, offering you help against a large group of zombie-skin-wearing weirdos who hate civilization (Including your attempt at maintaining your own), what do you do?

Yes, the extortionists are untrustworthy, greedy, and brutally violent. Still, they’re not making a point of saying how they think people “aren’t meant to live in cities”, hiding among huge herds of zombies, and threatening to destroy your community the way the other people are.

As bad as the situation is, the only choice you can make is to ally with the extortionists, because, while they might be a threat to your group later, the zombie-skin-wearing weirdos are a threat right now.

Of course, the problem of what happens after the weirdos are dealt with is, sadly, something you’ll have to accept in order to deal with them.

If I’m being honest, I imagine that a situation like this is far more likely a situation you’d run into in a zombie apocalypse than meeting a benevolent group, and that’s something you’re going to need to prepare yourself for, both to accept making such a choice, and also, preparing for its aftermath, so that, even if you must make a bad deal, you can handle the consequences.

And that’s our Walking Dead, Survival Rule Of The Week! The zombie apocalypse won’t be easy, and neither will be the deals we’ll have to make to survive one. Sometimes, you won’t be able to trust the people wanting to make deals. Sometimes, you’ll be able to avoid making such deals with such people, and sometimes…you won’t. Either way, the deals you make or don’t make will have consequences. If you want to be ready for those consequences, why not pick up a copy of my book, The Rules: A Guide To Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse!  You can also get it at Amazon here, on iTunes here!
