Who plays Beth in The Walking Dead?
By Renee Hansen
In season 2 of The Walking Dead, AMC introduced viewers to the Greene family and their farm, which would serve as a home base for our survivors until the end of that season. Hershel Greene, the owner of the farm and patriarch of the family, had two daughters, Maggie and Beth.
Maggie and Beth were half-sisters, sharing a father, but were very different from one another. Maggie was independent and confident, while Beth, who her family had always sheltered, was more reserved and naive to the world.
Beth and her family believed that the infected people who were reanimated were merely sick and there would eventually be a cure. When they discovered this wasn’t true, Beth had to, once again, mourn the loss of her mother. This caused her to try to commit suicide, an act which she quickly regretted. After that, she became stronger, which is a must in an apocalyptic world.
The Walking Dead – Beth
Actress Emily Kinney was 26 when she began playing Beth Greene, who was 16 years old. She would survive until her shocking season 5 death at the hands of Dawn Lerner (Christine Woods).
Beth had been abducted and taken to Grady Memorial Hosptial, where she was required to work off the medical care given to her. At one point, Beth tries to escape with her newly made friend Noah (Tyler James Williams), also a captive at the hospital. Noah escapes, but Beth is recaptured. When Rick, Daryl, and the others try to make an exchange of prisoners with Dawn, Beth stabs her with a pair of scissors causing Dawn to discharge her gun into Beth’s head.
This death goes on the list of the most shocking in The Walking Dead series. Back in the days when The Walking Dead didn’t announce a character was leaving and weren’t afraid to shock the fandom.
Kinney was born in Wayne, Nebraska, and attended Nebraska Wesleyan University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre. She would move to New York to pursue a stage and acting career.
She would star in many roles, including Law & Order – Criminal Intent and Special Victims Unit, The Good Wife, The Big C, Aunt Tigress, The Following, The Flash, Arrow, Conviction, Ten Days in the Valley, Messiah and The Enormity of Life.
During her time on The Walking Dead series, Beth would often sing at her father’s request. After leaving the series, Kinney would begin her musical career.
She currently has five albums:
- Blue Toothbrush – EP (2011)
- Expired Love (2013, 2014) (re-released with additional tracks)
- This Is War (2015)
