The Walking Dead Toby Carlson, who plays this character?

The most recent episode of The Walking Dead was titled “Warlords.” This episode introduced many new characters, which grew the TWD Family by many.

This article will contain spoilers for “Warlords,” so proceed with caution if you haven’t watched this episode yet. 

The Commonwealth has sent Aaron and Gabriel as emissaries to this new community called Riverbend with a group of Commonwealth troopers led by newcomer Toby Carlson. He is a lead recruiter for the Commonwealth, and this new community, which little is known about, is one the CW feels they need to reach out to. Viewers knew from the get that this was a bad idea.

Carlson is a charismatic man who, at first glance, is just an average man doing the job he is tasked with. But, after meeting with the warlord of Riverbend and shooting up everyone in the room, it is obvious there is more to this man than first meets the eye.

We see a flashback to one week ago when Dep. Governor Lance Hornsby meets with Carlson. Is anyone else concerned about the amount of alcohol that Hornsby is consuming? This can’t be a good thing, and he looks awful!

It appears that Hornsby’s plans are falling apart. He used resources Milton released for Alexandria for “that other thing,” and the convoy was hijacked, and all of the troopers were killed. His scouts followed tracks to an apartment building, the community of Riverbend.

Hornsby enlists Carlson for “a surgical solution” in handling Riverbend. This is where viewers learn that Carlson is a former CIA agent. This explains his skill in shooting everyone in the room at Riverbend in the present day.

Basically, Hornsby required someone to clean up his mess, and who better than a former CIA agent who could make quick work a big problem. Carlson commented that he enjoyed being retired, but his actions at Riverbend tell a different story. He had no issues stepping right back into his CIA shoes with a vengeance.

Jason Butler Harner plays Toby Carlson. He is recently known for his role as Agent Roy Petty in the hit series Ozark.  Other roles he is known for include Next, This is Us, Ray Donavan, Scandal, The Blacklist and Betrayal. His upcoming projects include a short titled I Was a Stranger and a movie, Sour Milk.

According to IMDB, an interesting bit of trivia that ties into TWD, Harner was raised in Alexandria, Virginia.

Will Carlson have a more significant role to play? It will be interesting to see what is next for this character.
