The Walking Dead’s Scott Wilson would have been 80 today
By Renee Hansen
Scott Wilson was perfectly cast as Hershel Greene on The Walking Dead series. He portrayed the Greene family patriarch as only he could. Wilson would have turned 80 today, and it is only fitting that we look back and remember the vital role he played in TWD Family.
Hershel was first introduced in episode 1 of season 3, “Bloodletting.” Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) carried his son Carl (Chandler Riggs) to the Greene Farm to seek medical attention for a gunshot wound. Hershel was a veterinarian by trade but promised to do his best to save the boy, and he did.
He was a religious man who loved his family and held tightly to his morals. He was a former alcoholic who shared his wisdom with all who would listen. At the beginning of the outbreak, he held tight to the hope that those infected with the virus would eventually be cured. But, during the barn massacre, he learned the truth and was devastated.

Fans of the series love to remember Wilson and his character by celebrating Spaghetti Tuesdays on Wednesday, a phrase Hershel coined to lighten the mood during a dire time at the prison when the terrible flu broke out.
It shocked the fandom when Hershel was decapitated by the Governor (David Morrissey) in season eight’s midseason finale “Too Far Gone.” He and Michonne (Danai Gurira) were captured by the Governor and used to taunt Rick at the prison. He used Michonne’s katana to quickly kill Hershel in front of Rick and the others, including his two daughters, Beth (Emily Kinney) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan).

If you have never watched Wilson in other roles, you really should check some of them out. His first role was in the mystery thriller In the Heat of the Night in 1967. He also starred in In Cold Blood, The Ninth Configuration, The Great Gatsby (1974), The Right Stuff, The Twilight Zone, Bosch, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Pearl Harbor, and so many more.
Happy heavenly 80th birthday Mr. Scott Wilson, you are greatly missed and fondly remembered by the fans of The Walking Dead.
