The Walking Dead has always been on the cutting edge as far as promotions for the series. In 2010, one week ahead of the premiere, AMC hosted a 26 city promotional stunt that began in Taipei and Hong Kong and ended at the show’s Los Angeles Premiere on October 26, 2010.

Cities involved with the new series The Walking Dead promotion included  New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, London, Munich, Madrid, Rome, Athens, Johannesburg, Sao Paolo, and Buenos Aires. The stunt would take cues from the series Special Effects Creator and legend Greg Nicotero and see people don their best zombie makeup and make their way through the cities as hordes of the undead.

The planned outbreaks would occur near major landmarks such as the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, Big Ben in London, Prado Museum in Madrid, the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul, the Acropolis in Athens and more.

Looking back at this type of promotion 12 years later doesn’t seem too strange. To see what this series has become, it makes sense, but at the time, many would have thought this was overkill to host a worldwide marketing campaign for a new series.

Here are some photos of the event

It would be very cool to see something like this ahead of the final episode of the series. With the fanbase this series has now generated, there would be a massive turnout for an event like this to celebrate our beloved series before the final episode airs.
