The Walking Dead series has finally brought together two characters that had a relationship in the comics. Fans of the comics have been waiting to see the pairing of Mercer (Michael James Shaw) and Princess (Paola Lazaro). This week’s episode saw that the flirting between the two has finally come to something.

Mercer has a significant role in the Commonwealth as the General of the military. He takes his role seriously and expects the residents and his troops to follow the rules. In the episode “The Rotton Core,” Mercer became aware of a scheme that Governor Milton’s son Sebastian had been organizing that caused the death of many people. He also found that two of his troopers were involved and killed them in a very uncharacteristic move.

Princess is a carefree, talkative person who still finds the good in each day even though she had a brutal past. We learned vital information about this character in the season 10 episode “Splinter.” Since moving to the Commonwealth, she has gotten a job and tried to fit in this new community.

In this week’s episode, “Trust,” we see the couple in bed together. It is a very different side to both characters as Mercer is always serious and guarded, and Princess is usually more high energy. This scene shows them as they wake, very early in the morning, and it is a casual groggy conversation that shows a softer side of both characters. When Princess does try to get him to open up, he shuts her down.

Later in the episode, we see Mercer talking to his sister Max, and this is when we hear him voice his guilt over all the people he couldn’t protect during Sebastian’s schemes. He then goes to Princess, opens up to her, and confesses to killing the two troopers.

In this scene, we see a serious side to both characters on a relationship level, showing how much he trusts her. If that information got out, it would ruin him, and who knows what his punishment would be.

Both characters have strong skills. Mercer’s strengths have been displayed since his introduction. He is skilled at combat and leadership, making him a perfect fit for the military leader. Princess displayed her keen observation skills while being held with Eugene, Yumiko and Ezekiel when they were first brought to the community.

It will be interesting to see where these two characters go from here. Perhaps they will lead the resistance against the Commonwealth.

The Walking Dead Princer

Shaw and Lazaro recently attended Fandemic Tour in Atlanta and were featured in a panel, and there, it was decided that their ship name is Princer. You can watch the panel here:
