The Walking Dead’s Paola Lazaro’s play There’s Always the Hudson
By Renee Hansen
Walking Dead fans have enjoyed Paola Lázaro’s on-screen portrayal of the comic story character Juanita Sanchez, aka Princess. She came on the scene as if she walked directly off the comic page, complete with her iconic pink coat and purple hair. Now that she has relocated to the community of the Commonwealth, she has a bit of a softer look.
Princess is a dynamic character who is talkative and very observant. Upon gaining entry into the new advanced community known as the Commonwealth, she began a flirtation with the military general, Michael Mercer (Michael James Shaw). In the most recent episode, “Trust,” it appears the pair are now an item, and the fandom thinks the couple is just adorable.
Lázaro has been a welcome addition to the cast with her unique talents, as seen specifically in the season 10 episode “Splinter,” which sheds light on PTSD, ADHD, and mental health issues.
With nine episodes remaining in the series Princess still has some story to tell. Will she and Mercer lead the resistance? Or are there other things they will be involved in? Only time will tell.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC on Sunday, April 10 at 9 p.m. with the midseason finale of season 11.
Paola Lazaro – There’s Always the Hudson
Did you know that Lázaro is also a talented playwright? During the 2016-2017 season, her play, Tell Hector I Miss Him, was featured at the Atlantic Theatre Company in New York City.
If you are in the Washington DC area anytime from May 9, 2022, to June 5, 2022, you can get tickets to another play she has written titled, There’s Always the Hudson. The play will be featured at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and tickets can be purchased online a few days before the first performance.
There’s Always the Hudson was written by Lázaro, who also stars as the lead performer. The story follows Lola and T, who met years ago in a sexual abuse survivors support group. The pair made a pact, and the deadline is closing in. This work looks at how people confront their trauma and how their found family can help see them through it all.
