Who plays Maggie in The Walking Dead?
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead is set in a zombie apocalypse, which means many characters have been killed during the 12-year run. Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) are the only two characters who remain from season 1 still appearing in the series. Viewers know Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) survived the blast at the bridge, but he is no longer on the series.
During the second season of the series, we met the Greene Family. They aided Rick and his group when Carl (Chandler Riggs) was shot and sheltered them. In the current timeline, Maggie is the lone survivor of the family we met during that early season of the series. She has a son, Hershel, named after his grandfather, leaving them to be the last of the Greene family.
Maggie has always been independent and brave, but she has become a strong leader and fierce fighter since the outbreak.
The Walking Dead – Maggie Rhee
Lauren Cohan is the actress who has portrayed Maggie Greene Rhee since the season 2 episode, “Bloodletting.” She came to the scene on horseback as she saved Andrea (Laurie Holden) from a walker with a baseball bat and retrieved Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) to be with her son, Carl, who had been shot. She made quite the impression on Glenn (Steven Yeun), as was evident by the look on his face, and he would eventually become her husband.
Maggie has suffered much loss since the outbreak, and although she has had her struggles dealing with everything she has lost, she has continued to push on.
Cohan left the series for a time and made her return in season 10. She returned after many years with some new friends, The Wardens, and was in the middle of a battle with a group called the Reapers. This group would be the focus during the beginning of season 11.
She has now made an enemy of Leah (Lynn Collins), a member of the Reapers, who appears to be partnering with Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton) of the Commonwealth.
Another area that Maggie has dealt with is facing her husband’s killer, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). When season 11 opens, her focus on Negan and the Reapers consumes her. But, as the season moves on, there has been a shift in Maggie. Finally getting revenge for all the people the Reapers killed has eased some of her rage. Perhaps the conversation with Negan about her being more like him than she realizes has finally hit home.
The Walking Dead has nine episodes until the series is completed, and then Maggie and Negan will go off on their own adventure in a spinoff series. Isle of the Dead will be set in Manhattan as the pair journey there for unknown reasons. This series is set to release in 2023.
