On Sunday, April 10, AMC will air the last midseason finale ever for The Walking Dead series. This is a monumental episode in a series that has aired for 12 years. The episode is titled “Acts of God,” and the teaser shows that this one will be full of action.

The fandom has gotten very nostalgic as these milestones occur. Filming was recently wrapped for the series at the end of March, and it was a sad day for fans, cast, and crew. It has been a long road, and it is hard to see it end. This Sunday, the last midseason finale will air, making another bittersweet marker denoting that the end is drawing near.

Including the season 11 episode, the series will have had 10 official midseason finale episodes. Season 1 only consisted of six episodes, therefore didn’t have one. While season 10 was interrupted by COVID and bonus episodes were added, the eighth episode, “The World Before,” was officially the midseason episode.

A lot is expected from a midseason finale. This episode will often leave viewers with a significant cliffhanger to be picked up when the season returns after a few months break. The Walking Dead is notorious for killing off a character during this episode or leaving viewers guessing if someone was killed.

The Walking Dead midseason finale rankings

Everyone in the fandom has opinions on which episodes, seasons, and characters are the best. As I looked back at the midseason finales, it wasn’t easy to pick the top five as each had its impact on the series.

Below are my top five midseason finales.

#5 – Season 8 “How It’s Gotta Be”

This action-packed episode contained many great moments, but the most impactful moment was when Carl Grimes lifted his shirt to reveal a walker bite.

#4 – Season 5 “Coda”

This episode saw the shocking death of Beth, and whether she was a favorite character or not, her death was traumatic. To see the reactions of her sister Maggie and her friend Daryl was too much to bear.

#3 – Season 9 “Evolution”

This episode had a creepy vibe all the way through. Viewers knew the Whisperers were coming, but no one knew the entrance would be this dramatic. The fandom gasped when the “walker” stabbed Jesus in the back and whispered, “You are where you do not belong.”

#2 – Season 2 “Pretty Much Dead Already”

One of the most shocking scenes in the series is when Sophia emerges from the barn as a walker. In this episode, Hershel finally has to face the truth of what is going on with the virus. Shane loses it and unleashes the walkers from the barn. He and the others shoot them all, to the horror of the Greene family. After that, viewers see Sophia come out of the barn, Daryl has to hold Carol back, and no one, not even Shane, can raise their gun to put her down. Rick is the one who ends up doing the job.

#1 – Season 4 “Too Far Gone”

Philip, the Governor, has returned with a new group of people and is hell-bent on revenge. This episode sees him decapitate Hershel in front of Rick and his whole group. This turns into an all-out battle as the Governor, and his people try to take down the prison. During an intense brawl between the Governor and Rick, when it appears the Governor has the upper hand, Michonne runs him through with her katana. By this point, the prison is lost, and it is everyone for themselves.
