The tenth episode of Fear the Walking Dead’s seventh season was titled “Mourning Cloak” and was directed by Lennie James, who plays Morgan Jones in TWDU. This episode focused on Charlie’s arrival at Strand’s tower and introduced a new character, Ali.

This episode was a coming of age of sorts for Charlie as she experienced a bit of what it means to be a kid turning 13 with a bowling lesson, a first kiss, and a little puppy love. She meets a new character named Ali in the woods, a resident of Strand’s Tower. After being taken back to the Tower for questioning by Howard, the pair embark on a journey to obtain parts for the elevator at the Tower.

This week’s MVP was fairly easy to choose as this person defied what they thought they wanted to ensure someone had what could possibly be one last amazing experience.

THE MVP FOR MOURNING CLOAK – ALI

Fear the Walking Dead – Ali

At the beginning of the episode, Ali’s goal was to impress Strand and Howard so he could become one of the rangers. Later in the episode, we learn his father was a military man, and perhaps he thought becoming a ranger would be a good way to honor his father’s memory.

Howard, who had assumed charge of the Tower in Strand’s absence, sets Ali on a mission to find the elusive Mourning Cloak butterfly for Strand’s collection. Ali is unsure how this will prove his worth. Howard tells him that all butterflies begin as caterpillars but strive to become something greater, the butterfly.

When Ali first sets off with Charlie, neither is impressed with the other. Howard sent Ali to find out what Charlie’s true motives were in coming to the Tower. Howard believes Morgan sent her, and he was correct.

The first ice breaker they experience together is at the bowling alley, where Charlie confesses she never played the game, and Ali proceeds to teach her. After some close calls, they confide in one another; she tells him Morgan did send her to turn off the beacon light, and he tells her he left his father alone to die because he was a coward.

They share a first kiss, and as they are making plans to run away together and experience other things they never got to do, she collapses. She was exposed to radiation and is now gravely ill.

Ali then goes against Howard and Strand, something he wouldn’t have thought of doing at the beginning of the episode. He decides that he will do the job she was sent to do and turn off the light. But, he gets caught by Howard. He realizes that things will never change at the Tower with Strand in charge. Howard throws him off the roof.

Ali had always thought himself a coward, but in the end, he did a heroic thing by trying to make a change at the Tower.
