Fear the Walking Dead

Sometimes, the only way to be you is to pretend to be someone else.

I know this is a weird thing to hear; hell, it’s a weird thing to say, but in a zombie apocalypse, at the very least, I think it’s true.

What got me thinking about this was watching John Dorie Sr. in this week’s episode of Fear TWD pretending to stand with Howard, trying to impose what he believed Strand would have done on Ali, Charlie, and June.

John Sr. was doing that because he had hoped that, by appearing to be on his side, he could convince Howard to steer Strand away from carrying on hostilities with Alicia and Morgan. John didn’t agree with what Howard or Strand were doing, but he hoped they believed he did.

If you are in a group in the zombie apocalypse but not leading it, it means that you’re subject to the decisions of whoever is in charge, which can be something of a dicey prospect. If your leader decides one day to go ape and attack a neighboring group, you will have to deal with that, whether you agree with the idea.

Suppose you don’t or disagree with similar ludicrous ideas. In that case, the only way you may be able to prevent them from coming to fruition is by feigning blind loyalty to your leader but attempting to steer them away from the potentially self-destructive course they’ve set for your group.

Sometimes the only way to be true to yourself in a zombie apocalypse is by pretending that you aren’t.
