At the end of season 6, as the nuclear bomb was being deployed, Strand took refuge in a building whose sole occupant was a historian named Howard (Omid  Abtahi). As the pair waited for the bomb to explode, they came to terms with their demise. Then, a miracle occurred; they were far enough away, unaffected by the fallout.

Believing luck was on his side, Strand decided to embrace his true character and be the man he has always been. He took it upon himself to do something Morgan (Lennie James) and the others have never successfully accomplished, create a place where people can live and be safe.

Anyone who has watched the series from the start knows Strand’s true nature. He is a conman who always looks out for number one. When people like Morgan take the lead and have a very different moral compass, it makes things difficult for people like Strand, who can think of several other ways to accomplish things, ways that people like Morgan would never dream of.

Since setting up the Tower, Strand has been able to spread his wings and free himself of the restrictions of what others think he should be doing. He lived that way for quite some time, making the decisions he knew others thought were right, but now he can do what needs to be done to keep the Tower running without worrying about what others think.

This is obvious in little things he does, like sending people out to gather butterflies for his collection. This is a self-serving mission that serves no purpose in furthering the betterment of the Tower residents.

In the interview, Domingo said that he loves that people hate Strand because this proves they are doing their job.

"“Yeah, you should not want to be like Strand.”"

And he is truly one character fans love to hate.

The war between Strand and Alicia is building as Alicia has found her confidence once again and is ready to lead. And Howard is proving to be a vital part of Strand’s army as he is either being groomed by Strand into the person he is becoming or his true nature is finally coming out.
