The Walking Dead untitled spinoff series that will feature fan-favorite character Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) has had a change of showrunners. Previously, current Walking Dead series showrunner Angela Kang was set to helm this series, but Deadline reports that David Zabel has now taken that position for this spinoff.

Zabel is known for his work on the PBS series Mercy Street, which he co-created with Lisa Q. Wolfinger. His other credits include ER, Dark Angel, Star Trek: Voyager, and more. Kang will serve as an executive producer on the Daryl spinoff series and continue to work on other projects for AMC. Deadline stated that Zabel’s deal was secured before Melissa McBride’s announcement of exiting the series.

The untitled Daryl series will be set and filmed in Europe and should start filming in two to three months, with a projected release date in 2023.

The Walking Dead spinoff series

The Walking Dead universe is no stranger to spinoff series. Fear the Walking Dead was the first spinoff that began airing in 2015 and is currently in its seventh season and has been renewed for an eighth.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond was a coming-of-age apocalypse story that focused on a group of young people who lived behind walls since the outbreak. They encountered a world vastly different from what they knew when they stepped outside the walls. The first season of this series was about character development, and many thought it was slow. Still, the second season took a deeper dive into the Civic Republic Military and made for a fascinating story.

This summer, Tales of the Walking Dead will premiere its first season. This series is an anthology-based series that will consist of stories featuring new and established characters within The Walking Dead world. This series has the potential to be something extraordinary. One episode in the first season will see the return of Samantha Morton as Alpha.

Another spinoff in the works is the Maggie and Negan center series, Isle of the Dead. Set in Manhattan, this story will see the duo head off to that island that has been cut off from the mainland for quite some time.

There are also many webisodes in TWDU that tell side stories in the same world.
