Fear the Walking Dead has begun the back half of season 7 with character-centric episodes. This is a drastic change from the expected story of the war threatened on Strand by Alicia during the midseason finale. But, these stories are character-building that will undoubtedly lead to the war that is brewing.

In last week’s episode, “Mourning Cloak,” viewers saw a look at Charlie, the youngest of our survivors, as she experienced turning 13 and some of the events a child turning that age before the outbreak would have also been able to experience. She got to bowl for the first time and had her first kiss and crush.

Morgan sent Charlie to the Tower to turn off the beacon to allow time for the walkers to disperse and Morgan and company to infiltrate the compound. To keep up the ruse, she tells Howard that she wants to live there and volunteers for a mission to retrieve elevator parts. She is joined by Ali, an eager young man who is out to prove that he is worthy of being one of Strand’s rangers.

Sadly, Charlie becomes gravely ill with radiation poisoning, and Ali is thrown off the Tower by Howard in this episode, making for an unfortunate ending.

AMC will air the following episode that marks the directorial debut of Alycia Debnam-Carey, “Ofelia,” tonight, May 1, at 9 p.m. ET. The synopsis for this episode reads:

"Luciana and Wes test the limits of their patience when Daniel’s worsening mental state ends up endangering them all."

The next episode, “Sonny Boy,” is currently available on AMC+. This episode will air on AMC on Sunday, May 8, at 9 p.m. ET.

“Sonny Boy” was written by Jacob Pinion & Justin Boyd and directed by Ron Underwood. Pinion wrote the webisodes The Althea Tapes and Dead in the Water, as well as episodes of Fear the Walking Dead in seasons 6 and 7. Boyd wrote “Till Death” from season 7 of Fear the Walking Dead.  Underwood has directed several Fear the Walking Dead episodes and the fifth episode of the Tales of the Walking Dead spinoff series that will release this summer.

This episode will see baby Mo go missing allowing John Dorie Sr. the opportunity to prove himself to Strand, who has become increasingly paranoid.
