Fear the Walking Dead’s most recent episode, “Ofelia,” was a banner episode as it marked the directorial debut of Alycia Debnam-Carey, who portrays Alicia in the series. This episode also focused on mental health, was spoken partially in Spanish, and marked the 25th appearance of Austin Amelio as Dwight and Mo Collins as Sarah Rabinowitz.

The episode begins as Luciana (Danay Garcia) and Daniel (Ruben Blades) work on his cognitive exercises to help his memory. He becomes fixated on a card with a boat on it, convinced that it is a sign from his daughter Ofelia, who died in season 3. He goes off on his own to find her, and Luciana and Wes (Colby Hollman) head out to find him.

It has to be noted that the cinematography during Daniel’s scene outside while he was still alone was outstanding!

Dwight is on his way to get a stash of weapons they located, and Sherry (Christine Evangelista) and Sarah (Mo Collins) are packing up to head out with him. This is a side story in this episode, but it is what leads Arno (Spence Granese) and the Stalkers to Daniel, Luciana, and Wes, where they capture them.

Arno takes them to their camp and tries to get them to reveal the location of the weapons cache. He heard them on the walkies as they talked about the weapons. Viewers also see that Arno was forced to remove his hand after Paul (Warren Snipe) shot him in the midseason premiere episode “Follow Me.”

Daniel continues to worry about looking for Ofelia as Arno wants to talk to them one-on-one. Despite Daniel’s confusion, he is still on his game and is able to take Arno’s gun from him and is no doubt aware that the firearm is empty by its weight, and later, he takes a knife from another captor. He also has the wits about him to give them the wrong coordinates of the location of the weapons, which he knows will send half of Arno’s people away and buys them time to free themselves.

Arno puts Wes in a cage suspended over a group of walkers to entice him to give them the location of the weapons. But, he has a more personal reason for choosing Wes first. He brings up Wes’ brother Derek (Chinaza Uche), who Wes killed back in Teddy’s (John Glover) bunker. Derek is the person who brought Arno into Teddy’s cult and isn’t happy that Wes killed him.

The trio eventually escapes with Sage (Jacob Kyle Young) as their hostage, and Daniel can finally see that Arno doesn’t have Ofelia as he told him he did. Luciana tells him he needs to face the truth: Ofelia is dead.

Daniel makes it so Luciana and Wes can’t follow him so he can deal with Arno in his own way. Knowing that they would try to stop him. Daniel then puts Arno in the same cage he held Wes for lying to him. Arno begs him not to as he was only trying to protect his people, but Daniel says, they are not your family. Daniel watches as walkers devour his lower extremities.

Luciana and Wes arrive and raise the cage to talk to Arno. He tells them that someone is letting out the irradiated walkers from the crater left by the bombs. In “Follow Me,” Arno and Sage are seen at the edge of the crater filled with a massive number of walkers. During “Mourning Cloak,” Ali was asked why Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) was sending people to the crater.

Is Strand using the irradiated walkers as weapons?

Luciana, Daniel and Wes talk with the remaining Stalkers and explain that even though they have all been enemies, they are all fighting the same enemies, the undead and Strand. They all know the Tower is the safest place to be, and they need to join forces. The Stalkers agree, stating it is what Teddy would have wanted.

Then in a shocking decision, Luciana lies to Daniel, telling him Ofelia is alive because he tells her that the only time things become clear to him is when he is focused on searching for her.

Luciana is doing what she knows needs to be done, just as Daniel has done in the past. In the episode, he told her, “I’ve always done what I needed to do.”

Wes feels he can no longer be a part of her plan and goes off on his own. This is a bit ironic as we see him end up at Strand’s Tower by the end of the episode. He can’t handle Luciana lying to Daniel, but he can side with a man whose way of life is immoral.

Dwight and the others return to the USS Pennsylvania with the weapons, to Morgan’s delight. Just as they are talking about the need for soldiers to use the weapons, Luciana conveniently returns with the remaining Stalkers. It appears things are falling into place nicely for Morgan, Alicia, and the rest to take over Strand and the Tower.

It was a great episode that will undoubtedly lead to more intriguing storylines as the season progresses.
