Fear the Walking Dead is the first spinoff series of The Walking Dead. The series began airing in 2015, and the story began at the start of the outbreak. Throughout the series, the survivors have relocated from Los Angeles to Mexico to Texas, where the current season is set. Filming for this series has always taken place in Austin, Texas, but in 2022 that location will change.

AMC is currently airing the seventh season of Fear the Walking Dead, which has been renewed for an eighth. Being set in a zombie apocalypse, many characters have been killed off, and with that, many have been added as well. This series has also seen three characters cross over from the flagship series. The Walking Dead characters who are now featured in the Fear TWD story are Morgan Jones (Lennie James), Dwight (Austin Amelio), and his wife Sherry (Christine Evangelista).

The tone of Fear TWD has changed dramatically over time as they traveled to new locations, but the most drastic change was in season 6 when cultist Teddy Maddox (John Glover) deployed nuclear bombs over Texas. This created a double apocalypse when the fallout ruined the landscape and atmosphere.

Fear the Walking Dead filming locations

Fear the Walking Dead filmed seasons 1-2 in California and season 3 in Mexico, with seasons 4-7 in Austin, Texas, and the surrounding area, using many familiar landmarks. The Dell Diamond stadium used in season 4 is home to the Round Rock Express baseball team located in Round Rock, Texas.

Remember the Whirlin’ Wavez water park where Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and June (Jenna Elfman) encountered some gooey wet walkers? This was filmed at Volente Beach Resort and Waterpark in Leander, Texas, during the off-season.

Other locations used included the now-demolished Brackenridge Hospital, Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex, Manor Downs, Lakeline Mall, and Mabel Davis District Park.

The small town of Bartlett, Texas, would serve as the backdrop where Nick (Frank Dillane) would meet his demise at the hands of Charlie (Alexa Nisenson).

The site of Humbug’s Gultch was filmed at two family-friendly Old West towns, 7A Ranch Pioneer town in Wimberley and J. Lorraine Ghost Town in Manor.

Fear the Walking Dead moves filming

In November 2021, The Austin Chronicle reported that production for Fear TWD would be moving from Austin, Texas, to Savannah, Georgia. This is a severe blow to the filming industry in Texas, as many jobs are created with the production of this series. The report stated that the tax incentives for filming in Texas continue to see a decrease in funding.

Moving filming to Georgia is smart because The Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act (GEIIA) gives a 20% tax credit to companies that spend $500,000 or more in Georgia during production and post-production. This can include a single production or the total of multiple projects aggregated in a single tax year. It is hard to turn down tax credits of that size.

Unofficial reports have circulated that filming for season 8 of Fear TWD could begin this summer.
