The Walking Dead has received an excessive amount of press regarding Melissa McBride’s decision to take a break from her role as Carol Peletier and bow out of the planned spinoff series. This series would have featured her character and Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon off on a new adventure that would be very different from the flagship series.

On his 10th appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Reedus full-heartedly supported McBride’s decision to take a break. The Walking Dead has been airing for 12 years, for which McBride has been there since the beginning, and the final season required a year-long commitment for filming. Add to that a pandemic that threw everyone’s life into a tailspin. McBride is long overdue for time to herself to recharge.

During his interview with Fallon, Reedus also commented, “I image those characters will meet back up.” Referring to Carol and Daryl.

The Daryl spinoff series will be set in and filmed in Europe. This will be very different from filming in Georgia, where the original series was filmed for the duration. There has been no synopsis for the series, but filming should begin this summer with a release date sometime in 2023.

Reedus’ comment about the characters meeting back up gives fans of McBride’s hope that she will return at some later date. She is a fan favorite who has gone from a scared, abused wife to a badass who isn’t afraid to make the hard choices to keep the people she loves safe.

Another comment he made was that he might even meet up with some other characters. Fans may see other familiar faces in this spinoff as several cast members reside in Europe.

The good news is that the spinoff was initially planned to feature Daryl and Carol; this ensures their survival of the final eight episodes of The Walking Dead series that will air in the fall of 2022. Negan and Maggie will also survive as they have their own spinoff, Isle of the Dead, which is also expected to be released in 2023.
