The Walking Dead season 11 part 3: How will it end?
By Renee Hansen
Fans of the long-running series The Walking Dead know that the end is near. By the time we say goodbye to 2022, the series will have aired its final episode. The final season has been a wild ride that has focused heavily on the Commonwealth. The big question is, how will the series end?
Readers of the comic story know that there is a substantial 25-year time jump showing where the surviving characters are at that point. The series can hardly do this as there are several spinoff series to come and possible movies, so it is unlikely this will be played out in the series.
The season 11 midseason finale saw Lance Hornsby, as Deputy Governor of the Commonwealth, take over the communities of Alexandria, Hilltop, and Oceanside. But, to what end?
Inside the Commonwealth, Connie and her group have exposed the Miltons and the underhanded things going on within the elite of this community. What will happen next?
The Walking Dead season 11 finale
It isn’t easy to imagine how the series will end. Will things set up Maggie and Negan for their spinoff, Isle of the Dead? And, for Daryl in his spinoff that will somehow take him to Europe?
If the movies ever become a reality, will the final episode set those up as well?
Below are a few questions that would be nice to see resolved in the final episodes.
Will someone get Rick’s comic death?
In the comics, Rick is killed by Sebastian. This character really has no other purpose, so will someone else take this death? Fans have commented about how much Aaron has taken on the look of comic Rick, but he would need to get to the Commonwealth soon, as only eight episodes are remaining. Father Gabriel’s recent actions will ensure he is no longer welcome at the Commonwealth, but Eugene and Ezekiel are. Could one of them take Rick’s comic death?
Where are the missing characters?
Throughout the series, many characters just fall out of the story with no explanation. It would be nice to know where they have ended up, but we only have eight episodes, so that will not happen. But what about characters like Luke, Jules and Virgil? These characters have been more recent ones to just fade away. Luke and Jules are absent from the Oceanside lineup in the final scene of the midseason finale. And Virgil holds a vital piece of information; he knows that Michonne’s husband survived and that she is off searching for him. These seem like characters we should learn about before the end.
What was the fate of Oceanside?
Showrunner Angela Kang confirmed that in the midseason finale for season 11, Hornsby was flipping the coin to decide the fate of the residents of Oceanside. Will we learn the outcome of this coin toss?
Is Pamela Milton corrupt or just elitist?
Governor Pamela Milton comes from a wealthy political family. She believes a class system is the only way to govern society. While this thinking is quite absurd in an apocalypse, it doesn’t have anything to do with corruption. So far, nothing we have seen her do shows that she is aware of Hornsby’s other activities. She did have the list of names in her locked files, but there wasn’t a real explanation of what those files contain. Perhaps she is just as corrupt as Hornsby, but it has yet to be seen.
Will Lance Hornsby die before the end?
In the teaser trailer for part 3, Hornsby is covered in blood splatter, spinning his treasured coin and saying something about there always being a way out. Could he have finally snapped, and will this result in his demise? Did he finally push someone too far, and he will be unable to weasel his way out this time?
Was Annie introduced only to be killed?
Negan’s new wife, Annie, is expecting their child. Will this character be introduced and the killed? Or will Annie and the baby accompany Negan and Maggie and whatever carries them off to Manhattan in the spinoff series? And will Hershel also tag along?
Will the Commonwealth fall?
There is a resistance to the Commonwealth already in place, and Connie, Eugene and the others are building a case to bring more people against the leaders of this community. The teaser trailer for this segment of episodes shows that the streets of the Commonwealth are overrun with people, for or against; it is unclear, but most likely people on both sides. Will our survivors and the other resisters take over this community?
Will the Civic Military Republic (CRM) be introduced?
The CRM has been introduced in Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond. Will it also be featured in the final episodes of The Walking Dead? Viewers of the World Beyond spinoff know that Jadis traded Rick to the Civic Republic as her ticket to gain entrance into this community. If we are ever going to see Rick again, it will make sense for some introduction to this group.
The million-dollar question:
Will Rick Grimes make an appearance?
Andrew Lincoln did make a quick hop across the pond and was seen in Georgia. His visit was brief, but he could have had time to shoot a quick cameo for the final season. It only seems appropriate that the series begins and ends with Rick Grimes.
There are many other loose ends, and you know what Abraham says about those. There are too many to be wrapped by the final episode, but hopefully, some of these questions will be answered.
The Walking Dead will return to AMC this fall, most likely sometime in September 2022.
