Fear the Walking Dead: Does Wes survive the bunker?

This week’s Fear the Walking Dead saw a return to the bunker where cult leader Teddy Maddox (John Glover) locked up Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) before the nuclear bombs were deployed. This location almost caused the deaths of Dwight (Austin Amelio), Sherry (Christine Evangelista), and Mo, but luckily they escaped. Wes (Colby Hollman), who has switched sides and now works for Strand (Colman Domingo), was also caught in the bunker. Will he make it out?

Wes was introduced in the season 5 episode “Channel 4.” He comes across one of the “take what you need” boxes and a video of Morgan’s group. He had been searching for a group trying to do good in the world.

At the beginning of the outbreak, he survived with his brother Derek (Chinaza Uche). They were separated at some point, and Wes believed him to be dead. It was later revealed that Derek was alive and a member of Teddy’s cult. He was also responsible for the attack at Tank Town, even though he knew Wes was there. This prompted Wes to kill his brother, an act that he carries much guilt about.

In this week’s episode, “The Raft,” Wes pursues Dwight and Sherry as they have baby Mo. Strand has tasked him to apprehend the baby and return her to the Tower. Strand knows that Morgan and the rest wouldn’t risk attacking the Tower as long as she is inside for fear of harming the child.

During his pursual of the couple, they lead him into the bunker Alicia was held in, and Morgan and Alicia lead a horde of walkers inside. The walkers killed many Rangers who accompanied Wes, but the episode ends without viewers knowing Wes’ fate.

But, AMC spoils its own cliffhanger in the teaser for next week’s episode, “Divine Providence.”

So, Wes does survive to continue as Strand’s minion. Many still believe he will turn on Strand, which seems very likely. Fear the Walking Dead returns to AMC on Sunday, May 22 with a new episode.
