Fear The Walking Dead, SROTW: Giving Up Is Not An Option
By Liam O'Leary
Fear the Walking Dead season 7
Giving up means death.
When you think about the idea of “giving up” in a zombie apocalypse, you have to look at what doing that really means.
Imagine that you’ve survived the chaos of the initial zombie outbreak. You might be alone, you might be with your family or friends, you might be with a group of strangers, whatever the case may be, you’ve survived. While I won’t say things will get easier from this point, I will say that if you’re outside of a major city, you’ve made it past the most chaotic and horrific point in the apocalypse. The point where you’re most likely to die or see things that will scar you, so you’re already ahead of the game.
I bring this up because compared to what you’ll be used to prior to the apocalypse, what you’ll see and escape in the outbreak will be the worst things imaginable. Will there be other awful things? Yes, but I believe that, by the time you’ve seen them, it won’t affect you nearly as much as what you’ll see and experience in the outbreak, and if that is the case, why give up after that?
The further you go, the more you will learn, and the better you will become at adapting to and surviving in the apocalypse. I’m saying that you will only get better, meaning you will be continually improving your survival skills as your time in the apocalypse progresses, so what reason would you have to give up?
Giving up in a zombie apocalypse means that you’re throwing away all the skills you will have gained, all the ability you’ve acquired to survive in the apocalypse, and choosing instead to die because everything you’re doing is to try to survive if you’ve “given up” on that, you’re choosing death.
This is why you can’t give up. Your will is what keeps you alive.
