Fear The Walking Dead Season Seven: Who’s The Worst?
By Liam O'Leary
Fear the Walking Dead – Who is the worst?
Honestly, this has been a tough question for me to answer this season. I obviously can’t give it to Teddy, I was stretching things just by including him in the first place, so, declaring him the worst villain in a season he wasn’t even alive in would be a cop-out. Arno, even though he was a disciple of Teddy and did some awful things, like introducing Strand to the idea of weaponizing radioactive walkers, he did things for a purpose, to try to find a more permanent home for the rest of his fellow cultists, feeling responsible for them after Alicia’s failure to locate P.A.D.R.E. Howard might make a good choice, but as we learned in episode 712, he was displeased by the things he’d done at Strand’s behest. Still, he did them hoping that, by making a stable civilization at the tower, he would be vindicated as doing what was needed in the course of helping build that civilization.
I feel like crowning Wes would simply be unfair, as, of all of this season’s villains, he was the last to go that way, and only doing so after seeing Luciana lie to a confused and, frankly, easy-to-manipulate Daniel, wielding her surrogate father as a weapon against Strand. Had Luciana not done that, Wes wouldn’t have left the group. Hell, had Strand given it a minute, Alicia might have gotten through to him, as she hadn’t done any of the things that disgusted Wes in the first place, and he seemed like he was being persuaded by Alicia’s attempts to reach him.
This brings me to my top two seeds: Strand and Madison. Like I said in his entry, Strand was pretty much the villain of this season, constantly harassing Morgan and Grace at the sub, killing people left, right, and center, manipulating people, and using radioactive walkers as weapons. He is a solid candidate for the most irredeemable villain this season.
On the other hand, though, Madison spent the interim aiding a kidnapping ring, which, is bad enough on its own, but, once you realize that she’s not even doing it for an ostensibly “good” reason anymore, that makes it so much worse. If Morgan had found her at kidnapping number ten or something, still under the belief that that was the last one she needed before P.A.D.R.E. tried to help her find Alicia and Nick, that might have been one thing, but at this point, she’s lost track of how many she’s taken and seems to have given up on reuniting with her kids long before Morgan told her what happened to them, yet continued carrying on doing it, only stopping when she saw Morgan feel remorse for roping Ava into the whole P.A.D.R.E. situation.
I think, after really stewing over it, I have to say that Madison is the most irredeemable villain this season.
Why? Well, I think the best reason is a simple one: She believes that she’s too far gone. The whole reason why her re-introductory episode was titled “Gone” was because it describe how Madison saw herself. In her mind, she can’t go back to the person she was before, the person her children knew, because of all the families she’s separated and effectively destroyed by aiding P.A.D.R.E. on their mission. It’s the reason why, when finally given the chance to have her employers look for her children, that she refused: She believed she shouldn’t see them.
If Madison believes she’s too far gone, who am I to argue?
So, what do you think? Do you agree? Disagree? Is there someone else you think should be on this list? Is there someone else in this season you think was worse? Let me know in the comments!
