Fear the Walking Dead – Wes

Wes’ story this season was just sad. He turned heel because of something that was completely avoidable.

Okay, let’s back up for a second. In episode 711, “Ofelia,” we saw Luciana lie to Daniel, using his distorted and damaged memory to tell him that his daughter, Ofelia, was not dead (Even though she was) but was, in fact, being held captive inside of Strand’s tower.

Why did she do this? In the hope that it would give Daniel enough focus for the group’s planned incursion into the aforementioned tower.

Not surprisingly, Wes was rather disgusted with this. While he saw the brutal things Daniel did to Arno and Sage, he knew that, to some degree, Daniel couldn’t be blamed for it, as his mind had been slipping away from him for months. Luciana’s actions, on the other hand? Not only was she in full control of her faculties, but she knew that Daniel wasn’t and used that to her (And the group’s) advantage.

This was the whole reason Wes decided to join Strand, and even then, he was still reluctant to fully fall in line with Strand’s methods. As Dwight and Sherry pointed out, if he wasn’t, he would have killed them on the spot when he confronted them (In episode 713, “The Raft”) instead of just talking to them, or he would have killed Alicia instead of nearly letting her talk him down. If Luciana hadn’t lied to Daniel, Wes would never have joined Strand. It’s as simple as that.

That’s what makes his heel turn and eventual death so bad: It should not have happened.
