The Walking Dead: Best characters introduced in season 10
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead’s tenth season began as a regular season, but the pandemic would enter and cause all sorts of problems. What began as a normal season with sixteen episodes would be extended with an additional six bonus episodes to round out the season.
The bonus episodes focused on fewer characters and moved from 16 mm film to digital to allow for pandemic safety precautions. This season saw the return of Michael Cudlitz, who played Abraham Ford in the series, as director. He directed one episode in season 9 and returned in season 10 to direct the fourth and seventh episodes.
This season also marked the final for Michonne actress Danai Gurira. Her decision to leave the series didn’t come easily, but she felt she must follow her calling and the other things she felt called to do.
Another interesting casting announcement was that Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie Rhee, would be returning in season 11 as a series regular once again. It was also hinted that she could appear in season 10. Viewers saw her at the end of the regular season 10 and in a bonus episode as well.
The Walking Dead season 10 – best character additions
Thora Birch – Gamma (Mary) – as The Whisperer’s third in command, Birch did a fantastic job. She came alongside Alpha (Samantha Morton) and Beta (Ryan Hurst) as a welcome addition to the creepy skin-wearing group. Ultimately, she tried to break free from their ways, only to be killed by Beta.
Kevin Carroll – Virgil – this survivor who was supposedly looking for his family turned out to be a nightmare for Michonne. Hailing from Bloodworth Island, Virgil would drug Michonne, but he would also be the one to lead her to learn that Rick (Andrew Lincoln) survived the bridge explosion. After being spared by Michonne, Virgil would pay it forward by aiding Connie and helping her return to her family.
Paola Lázaro – Princess AKA Juanita Sanchez – was a character fans of the comics couldn’t wait to see on screen. Actress Paola Lázaro did not disappoint. Princess has quickly become a fan favorite. Her wit and keen observation skills have proven herself time and again. In the episode “Splinter,” Lázaro shined.
Okea Eme-Akwari – Elijah – this character is a friend of Maggie’s who comes with her when she returns to the communities. He has suffered a significant loss but is steadfast in his loyalty to Maggie. He will defend her and their friends with everything he has. He made quite the impression when he came on the scene with his intimidating mask and wicked-looking weapons.
Lynn Collins – Leah Shaw – although her introductory episode wasn’t a favorite with many fans, her portal of Leah as a Reaper was outstanding. She made for a great side villain, being a tough woman in a group of men, betraying the leader of her group, and her former lover, Leah, was a ruthless leader set on revenge for the death of her fellow Reapers.
Robert Patrick – Mays and twin brother – Fans were excited to learn that Robert Patrick would be joining the series. His character Mays was a little “off,” but Patrick did a fantastic job portraying him. He also played Mays’ twin brother in an awful twist to his story, which found the brother handcuffed in a room with the skeletons of his family. As he did with Aaron and Gabriel, Mays forced his brother to play Russian Roulette with his family.
Hilarie Burton Morgan – Lucille – Negan’s on-screen wife was brilliantly brought to life by his real wife. In the bonus episode “Here’s Negan,” fans got an origin story about Negan, including his wife and favorite weapon’s namesake, Lucille. Viewers saw his horrible treatment before her cancer diagnosis and his tender care for her after. It was revealed that Negan’s Savior Laura (Lindsley Register) was the one who originally gave him his bat.
