Walking Dead experience: Inside the walls of Alexandria

On July 1, 2022, the city of Senoia, Georgia, opened the gates of what is known as the community of Alexandria in The Walking Dead series. This was an exciting day for the fandom but also a sad one, as it is another reminder that the series is quickly coming to an end. Filming for the series ended in March, but the final episodes won’t air until this fall.

I couldn’t pass up the chance to drive to Senoia and walk down Morgan Street on the first day it was opened. For one reason, I had never had the pleasure to go behind the wall before, and two, I know many have never had and will never be able to see the wall before it is gone. I was told during my visit the walls could begin to be dismantled as early as next week.

I will admit I got quite emotional while filming a live video on my podcast Beauty & the Beazts Facebook page. You can hear my voice crack in the audio. I didn’t expect that to happen. The subdivision is known as the Gin Street Property and is being rebuilt, with the houses and brownstones being put up for sale.

One thing we can’t stress enough is the fact that several of the homes are occupied, and all of the structures are private property, which fans need to stay away from. I talked with Dave, a resident of one of the brownstones where a lot of filming took place. He said the residents are excited and nervous about the walls coming down. That morning one fan had already broken the rules and went off the public street filming on private property. Morgan Street runs from gate to gate, which is the only path any member of the public our tour groups are allowed on. The side streets, houses, lawns, etc., are private property and fans need to be respectful of this. We beg anyone visiting to respect the owner’s privacy so that no one ruins this for TWD Family.

UPDATE JULY 11, 2022:

The Walking Dead – Alexandria

Things are already looking quite different behind the walls. The windmill and church are gone, and sod has been put into place, making the landscape look very fresh. You can see the gazebo that will look familiar as it was used in several scenes and the pond where Daryl started the gas fire with the rocket launcher.

On my visit, all of the walls were still intact, but the word around town is that the walls could begin to come down as early as next week. There is still no official word on what will happen with the walls. The owner of the land and subdivision is heard to have ownership of the walls. Hopefully, something will be done so fans can purchase pieces as a souvenir.

I was privileged to be on the first tour Water Tower Tours gave on the newly opened street. I got to take the tour with my friends Anthony and Nicole, who are planning an amazing That’s My Viewing Party fan event for the finale episode of The Walking Dead.  Tour guide Stephen Sweet took us down the street to the gate, normally closed and guarded, to find it wide open. Our hearts were pounding, and I had goosebumps.

Directly inside and to the right still stands the perch where the guards would see anyone entering Alexandria. It was a fantastic piece for fans to see upon entrance to the community. If you look close, you can see the tracks where the slidable gates once stood. This is where Rick and the gang entered; Negan pounded on with Lucille saying, “Little Pig, Little Pig…” and so on.

It was pretty surreal to be walking on hallowed ground. The road I stood on had been walked on by many of my favorite characters, hordes of walkers, and others who have made one of the greatest shows ever created.

Below are more photos I was able to capture during my visit.

Here are additional photos from our Water Tower Tour. I tried not to spoil too much from the tour, so maybe you can take your own someday. There are many more spots to see than just TWD filming sites in Senoia.
