First look at Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici The Serpent Queen
By Renee Hansen
Samantha Morton will take a new role as one of history’s most notorious women, Catherine de Medici, in the Starz series, The Serpent Queen. Entertainment Weekly posted the exclusive first-look photos of Morton and other cast members in elaborate period costumes.
Catherine de Medici is known as the Serpent Queen because of her scheming ways and fondness for poison. She married King Henry II as an orphaned teenager, only to discover her husband was in love with another woman twice his age. Luckily she was an intelligent woman who could keep her marriage alive and would rule France for 50 years. She gave birth to French Kings Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III.
Starring alongside Morton is Charles Dance as Pope Clement, Liv Hill as the younger version of Catherine, Antonia Clarke as Mary Queen of Scots, and Ludivine Sagnier as Diane de Poitiers. The series created by Justin Hathe is based on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda. The Serpent Queen will premiere this fall on Starz.
Samantha Morton returning to The Walking Dead universe
Morton will return to The Walking Dead universe this summer in an episode of Tales of the Walking Dead. She portrayed the fearless leader of the Whispers, Alpha, and will reprise this role for one episode of the new anthology series.
The promo photo for Morton’s character lists her name as Dee. This supports the fan theory that the name Deborah that she used when infiltrating the Kingdom’s carnival was her real name. Dee could be short for Deborah, or AMC could be throwing fans off with the labeling of the photo, as they have done this before.
With her long hair in the photo and clip from the teaser video, viewers will get an early outbreak story about Alpha/Dee.
