6. “Wildfire”

  • Episode number: 105
  • Original airdate: Nov. 28, 2010
  • Major debuts: Dr. Edwin Jenner

How much you enjoy this episode will likely hinge on how you feel about Jim. Watching him try to decide what to do after being bitten by a walker seemed like a somewhat obvious move considering how dangerous walkers are, but watching it play out could be tough for some viewers.

Otherwise, the focus was on the group’s trip to the CDC and Rick trying to contact Morgan on his radio. After gathering themselves from the walker attack on the RV camp, other questions like what to do with those from their group who die are addressed.

This isn’t a bad episode at all. However, compared to the episodes in season 1, it lacks some of the memorable moments the others have to offer.

Highlights from the episode:

  • Tough farewells for Amy and Jim. Two very different deaths were handled in different ways and it really opened up conversations about what to do with the dead and doomed.
  • Arriving at the CDC. Completing a journey is always rewarding and that’s true with what is going on at the CDC.
  • Conflict developing between Rick and Shane over accountability. Setting the foundation for the clash between these two characters is just amazing looking back on what happens between them throughout the upcoming episodes.

Lowlights from the episode:

  • The Morales family deciding not to stay with the group. A footnote on the show, these survivors could have been much more. Yet, they felt like an unnecessary addition to a story that would have been fine without them.
  • A strange detour to the CDC is a major comic diversion. When asked about his biggest regret from the AMC show, Robert Kirkman usually says it is including the CDC. While it is interesting, it seems like a strange inclusion on a show that doesn’t need it.
