Tales of the Walking Dead: details shared by showrunner and cast
By Renee Hansen
Tales of the Walking Dead will be the first release in the newest batch of spinoffs in The Walking Dead universe. Fear the Walking Dead, the first spinoff of the main series, is currently filming its eighth season, with TWD: World Beyond being the second spinoff, created as a limited two-season series. Tales of TWD will premiere on AMC and AMC+ on August 14.
TWD veteran Channing Powell serves as showrunner and developed the series with Walking Dead COO Scott Gimple. TWDU director Michael Satrazemis directed three of the six episodes in season one. Haifaa al-Mansour, Deborah Kampmeier and Ron Underwood directed the remaining three.
For those who don’t know, Tales of TWD is an anthology-based series that will tell a new story within each episode. The cast members for this series are incredible, and you will see one familiar face from the flagship series. Samantha Morton will return in the season finale episode, reprising her Walking Dead role but with a much different story than viewers have seen in the past.
Morton shared at Comic Con 2022 that the backstory we saw regarding Alpha was from Lydia’s point of view. A child sees things very differently; sometimes, the things they see don’t make sense. Alpha’s name was previously Dee, and that is whose story we will see in the sixth and final episode of season 1 of Tales of the Walking Dead.

During Comic-Con, Powell and cast members Terry Crews, Samantha Morton and Danny Ramirez attended the Tales of TWD panel and interviewed with several media outlets. Their interview with Collider was a fascinating look into what fans can expect from the first season and some fun behind-the-scenes tidbits.
First of all, you can watch Tales of the Walking Dead even if you have never watched an episode of The Walking Dead. Powell said there could be some fun Easter eggs for fans of the main series, but it won’t affect the story for someone unfamiliar with TWD.
The episodes in Tales of TWD occur at different times during the apocalypse, even many years into the future. And they tried to utilize as many parts of the US as possible for these stories.
Crews shared that people would be shocked about how much work goes into one episode of the series. He said it is like filming a full feature film in 10 days.
Ramirez said it was humorous to see a family of walkers sitting in the green room waiting to be called in for filming and see them texting on their phones.
Samantha Morton commented about the talented crew that films for TWDU and how tightly things are run.
Crews compared filming this series and the tone of each episode to the song “I Will Always Love You.” Dolly Parton’s version is very different from Whitney Houston’s; the same is true for each episode of this series.
Don’t miss Tales of the Walking Dead when it premieres on AMC on August 14.
