The Walking Dead universe Saturn Award nominations
By Renee Hansen
The list of nominations for the 50th-anniversary edition of The Saturn Awards has been released, with several nominations going to The Walking Dead universe. Overall, AMC has great representation with close to 20 nods, with Better Call Saul in the lead, followed by The Walking Dead.
It is exciting to see TWDU recognized for its greatness; even though some of the categories are questionable, it is great to see so many names from The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead on the list.

The Walking Dead universe Saturn Award Nominations
It is great to see both The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead series nominated in the Horror TV category. They are up against some great competition with American Horror Story: Double Feature, Chucky, From and What We Do in the Shadows.
Colman Domingo, who plays Victor Strand on Fear the Walking Dead, is very deserving of his nomination. Domingo is a fantastic actor who is a chameleon who can play almost any role. He is in good company against Chiwetel Ejiofor, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Tyler Hoechlin, Superman & Lois, Harold Perrineau, From, Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul, Michael C. Hall, Dexter: New Blood and Sam Heughan, Outlander.
New to season 11 of The Walking Dead is Michael James Shaw, who plays Mercer of the Commonwealth. He is nominated for the Supporting Actor in a Network / Cable Series category. He is also in the talented company of Jonathan Banks, Better Call Saul, Tony Dalton, Better Call Saul, Patrick Fabian, Better Call Saul, Harvey Guillen, What We Do in the Shadows, Michael Mando, Better Call Saul and Brandon Scott, Jones Ghosts.
The Supporting Actress in a Network / Cable Series is the first questionable category. Both Lauren Cohan and Melissa McBride are nominated in this category. Let that soak in a moment. McBride has been with the series since season one without ever leaving and Cohan since season 2 with a short break before returning in season 10. I don’t think either of these women qualifies as supporting actresses in this series as they are lead actresses. But, they both deserve these nominations, for they never get the recognition they deserve. They are nominated with Emmanuelle Chriqui, Superman & Lois, Janina Gavankar, Big Sky, Julia Jones, Dexter: New Blood, Danielle Panabaker, The Flash and Sophie Skelton, Outlander.
The final category, the one that genuinely baffles, is Guest-Starring Performance: Network / Cable Series. Michael Biehn portrayed Ian in season 11 of The Walking Dead in a guest starring role, and Aisha Tyler was a guest star as Mickey on Fear the Walking Dead. These characters were awesome additions and deserved to be nominated for their time in their respective series.
But, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the actor who has portrayed Negan Smith on The Walking Dead in a lead role since 2016, has been categorized in the guest starring category. Did I misread that? This one truly makes no sense. I am glad that JDM is getting recognized, as he and the majority of the cast never get their just rewards in that area but come on, guest star?
Chad Coleman who played Tyreese in The Walking Dead stars in two series that are nominated for Saturn Awards. The Orville and The Expanse are both nominated in the Science Fiction Series (Streaming) category. Be sure to check him out in both of those series.
Congrats to all the nominees. Let’s hope for some big wins for TWDU.
