Walking Dead: National Bowling Day with celebrity bowling (2012)
By Renee Hansen
August 13 is National Bowling Day, and you never know what fun Walking Dead tidbits you will find when you scour the internet. Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick created a great way to raise money for charity back in 2012-2013. The show was called Chris Hardwick’s All-Star Celebrity Bowling, and the title is pretty self-explanatory. Hardwick and his Nerd Squad teamed against different TV show teams to bowl for charity.
The series consisted of 20 episodes, and on May 7, 2012, during episode 6, the Nerd Squad consisting of Hardwick, Kumail Nanjiani, Dana Gould and Emily Gordon, came up against some of The Walking Dead cast members, Lauren Cohan (Maggie), Steven Yeun (Glenn), Scott Wilson (Hershel), and comic story creator Robert Kirkman.
The episode (below) is full of fun and laughter, and Hardwick tries to convince them day drinking is the way to win the game. Yeun even pulled off a Turkey, three strikes for those who don’t know, which turned that into a ‘four bagger.’ Hardwick, not wanting to be shown up, also gets a Turkey of his own.
While doing a little smack talk, Kirkman yells to Hardwick, “You’ll never be as good as your dad.” Which Hardwick proved by getting a spilt. His dad was Billy Hardwick, a ten-pin bowler who was the first player to capture the PBA “Triple Crown” by winning all three primary PBA major tournaments: U.S. Open, PBA National Championship, and Tournament of Champions.
This video is extra special as it features Scott Wilson, who passed away on October 6, 2018. It is great to see him having fun with his fellow Walking Dead actors.

If you don’t want to watch, I will tell you who wins. The Walking Dead team became the first team to beat the Nerd Squad at this point in the series. Yeun’s charity was Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Kirkman’s was Child’s Play, Lauren Cohan supported Ace of Hearts Dog Shelter, and Scott Wilson chose the MPTF Community Care fund for his charity.
Other shows who went up against the Nerd Squad included Mad Men, MythBusters, Breaking Bad, Doctor Who, Team Fallon and WWE Superstars.
This was a fun walk down memory lane on National Bowling Day.
