Is Tales of the Walking Dead episode 1 Evie/Joe worth watching?
By Renee Hansen
Tales of the Walking Dead is the latest spinoff in The Walking Dead universe. With the flagship series set to end in November 2022, AMC Networks has big plans for this universe, and the new spinoffs will open the small world of TWD worldwide.
This article contains no significant spoilers for Tales of the Walking Dead episode 1, “Evie/Joe.”
The first episode of Tales of the Walking Dead takes place 405 days into the apocalypse and features a prepper named Joe, played by Terry Crews. Joe is a recluse who was a ready-for-anything type of guy with his well-stocked bunker. He and his dog Gilligan, Gilly for short, lived a monotonous life, but they were happy. When tragedy strikes, Joe sets off to find a fellow prepper he previously met via a chat room.
Along the way, he meets a woman named Evie (Olivia Munn), who is a free spirit and the polar opposite of Joe. After a rough start, they pair set off together, he to meet his prepper friend and she to find her lost loved one.
Tales of the Walking Dead episode 1
The chemistry between Crews and Munn alone makes this episode worth the watch. It is an excellent story of two unlikely people meeting up and embarking on a journey together where they each have a goal in mind, but life steps in and alters those plans.
Remember that the six episodes of Tales of the Walking Dead season 1 are standalone, and you don’t need to have watched any Walking Dead episodes to know what is going on in this series.
It is a great example of how life would actually be in an apocalypse. You never know who you will encounter, especially over one year in and how you may need to rely on someone you usually wouldn’t associate with as you have no common interests. But, in an apocalypse, your common interest is survival which will require making friends with people outside your comfort zone.
Another character, Sandra, played by Kersti Bryan, adds a bit of excitement to Joe and Evie’s story.
Tales of the Walking Dead returns to AMC Sunday, August 21, with the second episode, “Blair/Gina,” at 9 p.m. ET. This episode is available on AMC+.
