Tales of the Walking Dead Survival Rule: The Unlikeliest Things
By Liam O'Leary
Tales of the Walking Dead
The zombie apocalypse can bring out the best in us, even if we ourselves don’t believe it.Â
As we would learn in this week’s episode of Tales of The Walking Dead, a good part of Gina’s problem with Blair stemmed simply from her being too afraid of taking the risk of looking for a better job to get out from under her position as Blair’s metaphorical doormat. Gina’s life had largely been constrained by her own fear and lack of faith in herself.
This made her actions at the gas station (Through its many iterations) so much more surprising. Out of the blue, the mild-mannered secretary was pulling a shotgun out of the trunk of her car, holding up truck drivers, scaring off Homeland Security agents, and, basically, heisting a gas truck and driving it across Atlanta to try to save her family, all things which nobody would have predicted at the beginning of the day.
Right now, I’m sure there are lots of people who don’t think themselves capable of much in the way of bravery, heroism, leadership, or even survival, and I think that stems a lot from not having really been tested. Maybe I’m overly optimistic, but I like to believe that, if so tested, at least some of these people would rise to the occasion, with their “fight” instincts kicking in and causing them to find the courage and resolve necessary for them to become the survivors they need to be. Fear is a bigger hindrance to our success than I think many of us realize, and maybe, it takes being presented with a situation where we can’t afford to be held back by that fear to get us to shake it off and do what we need to do.
Sometimes, the unlikeliest thing, as far as we’re concerned, is being brave or strong, but I think that it’s much likelier than we realize; we just have to have enough faith in ourselves to be able to prove our doubts unfounded.
And that’s our Walking Dead Survival Rule Of The Week! A zombie apocalypse will be full of surprises, and much of this will be because of things you never expected happening…happen. Including, but not limited to, you discover that, when faced with death, that person you didn’t like turns out to be pretty good and that you, despite your own doubts, are far more capable of surviving than you might have originally given yourself credit for. If you want to be ready in case of the unlikely event of a zombie outbreak, why not pick up my book, The Rules: A Guide To Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse!
