In 2018, AMC announced that The Walking Dead universe would include a trilogy of movies. This was exciting news within the fandom as the promised movies would be a huge new venture for TWD, but the most exciting element is that it would bring back fan favorite Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). These films would continue the story of the leader of our survivors, who was taken off to parts unknown by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) and her helicopter. Viewers would learn in The Walking Dead: World Beyond that Rick was taken to the Civic Republic, as Jaids used him as her bargaining chip for her admittance into this community.

The other side to these movies would be Michonne’s (Danai) Gurira) story. Upon discovering that her husband didn’t die in the bridge explosion, she set off to find him. This storyline was written to account for Gurira’s departure from the series. When viewers last saw Michonne, she was aiding two people trying to get back to their group, a massive group traveling by wagon train.

The story of Rick Grimes and Michonne’s search for him is something the fandom needs to know. During SDCC 2022, an even more exciting announcement was shared. Rick and Michonne will be returning for a series of their own.

So, what does that mean for the trilogy of movies? They are no longer in production. Many factors had played into the delay of the movies, the pandemic, and the announcement of the end of the flagship series, to name two significant ones. And amidst all that, AMC saw some changes in executives who believed keeping this storyline “in-house” was a much better idea.

This means the movies are scrapped, but the story will be told in a series instead. This is excellent news for the fandom as AMC will keep control of the story, and Lincoln and Gurira will serve as executive producers for the project.

The first season will consist of six episodes and will hopefully go on for additional seasons. There has been no title announced for this series yet.
