Will there be a season 8 of Fear the Walking Dead?
By Renee Hansen
There is much talk of spinoffs within The Walking Dead universe, but we haven’t heard much about the first spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead. This series first aired its pilot episode in 2015, which began at the onset of the outbreak. Over the past seven years, like all shows who see extended runs, the series has had its ups and downs.
Fear the Walking Dead is currently filming its eighth season in Savannah, Georgia. This location is new for the upcoming season as the most recent seasons have been filmed in Austin, Texas. This move is attributed to the state of Georgia offering better tax incentives than Texas is currently offering.
The new location will require showrunners to account for the difference in the landscape, which they began in the season 7 season finale episode by setting the survivors on a quest to locate a new, safer place to live.
Fear the Walking Dead season 8
Location isn’t the only new element Fear TWD dead will see in the upcoming season. Fan favorite Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) made her return in the final episode of season 7 and will return in season 8 as a regular cast member once again. Madison was presumed dead in season 4, but as always in TWDU, if the body isn’t seen, there is always room for a return.
Madison met Morgan (Lennie James) for the first time in the series as she worked for the mysterious PADRE group. Little has yet to be discovered about this group except they steal people’s children, a job Madison does for them. PADRE believes they know better than the children’s parents do on how to raise them. Madison stole baby Mo from Morgan but had a change of heart, and by the end of the episode, the pair headed off to PADRE.
Showrunners have said the next season will reveal much more about the workings of PADRE and will see much of the story take place on the water. Director Michael Satrazemis and showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg have used the word reinvent to describe the transformation of the series in future episodes. Fans are all for his reinvention, as season 7 was greatly criticized.
Several characters died during season 7, including Howard (Omid Abtahi), John Dorie Sr. (Keith Carradine), and Wes (Colby Hollman). Alycia Debnam-Carey left the series, so Alicia is also gone. This leaves several places to fill in the group, so new cast members should be announced for season 8.
Fear the Walking Dead will be included in the long list of releases in TWDU lineup for 2023, along with The Walking Dead: Dead City, the Rick and Michonne series, and the Daryl spinoff.
